Light. Fruity flavor. Notes of melon and pear. Truly one of my favorites. Both fruits and honey.
Longan trees were introduced to Hawaii from Asia.
Historical accounts trace Longan’s arrival in Hawaiʻi to plants brought from southern China by Captain John Cass in 1852.
It also carried some of the first Chinese immigrants to work on sugar cane plantations along Hamakua coast.
Currently grown in abundance. Can easily count over a thousand trees just between Hakalau and Kolekole gulches.
They bloom in clusters in summer and fruit in winter though different orchards has different varieties and season shifts all over the year.
As usual we can’t guarantee the source of nectar but putting hives in between hundreds of blooming Longan trees will provide plenty.
