Eucalyptus trees are signature of Hamakua coast. Robusta, Bluegum, Rosegum, Paperbark, Rainbow, you name it.
They first came to Hawaiʻi from Australia as a fast-growing tree for wood, windbreaks, and watershed plantings. Decades later, it took on a new role along the Hāmākua Coast, where groves were planted on former sugarcane lands.
They stay tall along the scenic Hamakua highway and go high up the mountain providing most of the honey collected along Hamakua coast.
