Hakalau

Hakalau is home to our bees. 13 miles from Hilo, between two deep gulches of Hakalau and Kolekole.
Kaahakini stream runs in between through cattle ranches and fruit orchards that were once planted with sugar cane. It’s era is gone but memory of it is still somewhere in the air, filled with sweet slightly rotten smell of old plantation houses that remained and blooms of all kinds. 100 years old Mango trees are dominant and home to hawks and owls. Lychee and Longan trees that outgrew backyard garden long time ago throw out occasional blooms and fruits. Tiny village of Wailea still blooms its magnificent Magnolia and Akiko is always there with her smile and red hibiscus flower behind her ear, welcoming visitors to her “Time Machine” small bed and breakfast.
This area is full of tropical fruit orchards that carry Lychee, Longan, Rambutan, Durian, Guava, Coconut palms and Citrus of all kinds. They take turns and compete with blooms and fruit abundance providing endless source of food for our bees and opportunity to capture all the nuances of tropical honey for us.
Eucalyptus of all kinds grows in long rows providing windbreak and spreading its healing aroma.
Deep in a gulches we have all sorts of runaways and small blooms of all kind and color.
Truly paradise for the Bees and those who around them
